Educational Support and Orphan Higher Education Fund
Since China announced its education reform to turn government-subsidized higher education into tuition-based public education more than ten years ago, the door to higher education for qualified orphanage children has been tightly shut. With limited government funding, education often becomes a lesser priority for many orphanages and therefore an unattainable goal for many orphans. However, enabling school-age orphanage children to receive formal education and master certain occupational skills is crucial to their survival and growth in society after they leave their orphanages.
To break down the stigmas and bring hope to older orphans who are academically qualified, CCC launched the Orphan Higher Education Fund in 2008, partnered with the China Center for Children’s Welfare and Adoption in Beijing. In 2008, seventeen high school graduate orphans selected from ten orphanages in four provinces received their acceptance letters from Changsha Social Worker College (CSWC), the largest such college in China, with more than 14,000 students.
It costs about $2,000 per year per student to attend CSWC, a huge expense in the eyes of an orphan, but a fraction of university tuition here in the US. The potential of such an investment is immeasurable. It has the power to change lives and offer hope and inspiration.
If you are interested in sponsoring one of these special students, you can donate online. As a sponsor, you will receive photos and a Life and Study Report every six months from your sponsored student. We can also arrange regular email communication between you and your student or even set up a visit with your student in China.
Of course, we have many school-aged orphans who need financial support to fulfill their dream of receiving preschool, elementary, middle school, or high school education. Please help them in building a future for themselves!
