Orphan Higher Education Fund
Since China announced its education reform to turn government-subsidized higher education into tuition-based public education more than ten years ago, the door to higher education for qualified orphanage children has been tightly shut. Often struggling to find funding to meet children’s basic needs such as food and medicine, orphanages have no financial ability to send any kids to college.
To break down the stigmas and bring hope to older orphans who are academically qualified, CCAI launched the Orphan Higher Education Fund in 2008, partnered with the China Center of Adoption Affairs in Beijing. On September 27, seventeen high school graduate orphans selected from ten orphanages in four provinces received their acceptance letters from Changsha Social Worker College (CSWC), the largest such college in China, with more than 14,000 students.
“This is a dream come true for us!” a tearful 18-year-old Li Qi from Henan Orphan School shared with CCAI president and co-founder Joshua Zhong at her college orientation.
It costs about $2,000 per year per student to attend CSWC, which is fraction of university tuition here in the US. But the potential of such an investment is immeasurable. It has the power to change lives and offer hope and inspiration.
