JCCC Classes
Joyous Chinese Cultural Center classes are held from September to May and consist of seven four-week sessions. There are break weeks between sessions and for major holidays. Classes take place on either Wednesday, Thursday, or Saturday and are held during mornings, afternoons, and evenings.
The teachers of the Joyous Chinese Cultural Center are from mainland China, and Mandarin Chinese is their native language.
JCCC classes are designed with age-appropriate activities that help children to learn about the Chinese culture and to begin to learn Mandarin Chinese. The content and structure of each level of classes are tailored to the interests and needs of each age group of children.
As young children learn best when actively engaged in a variety of learning experiences, our classes for children ages two through six are a fun mixture of Mandarin Chinese lessons, songs, games, dances, and art projects. All activities are carefully planned to integrate the concepts of the weekly lessons, support the vocabulary and concepts, and provide opportunities to practice and apply these concepts.
Students ages 7 and above study written and spoken Mandarin Chinese through Chinese textbooks. Lessons focus on a more in-depth study of Mandarin Chinese sentence structure, pinyin, tones, and written Chinese.

The Beginning Level classes are a basic introduction to Chinese language and culture. Lessons include simple Chinese words and phrases, songs, games, dances, and art projects. As the children grow, the curriculum increases in its degree of difficulty, as vocabulary, phrases, sentences, and concepts are expanded in age-appropriate increments. Beginning classes are one hour in length.
Each session consists of a four-week unit. Units are built around a theme such as “Greetings,” “About Me,” “My Family,” “Animals,” etc. Weekly lessons include vocabulary words and phrases, a Chinese song, and an art project that has been specifically designed to integrate the vocabulary and theme for the lesson. The projects are a hands-on way to help children to process the concept of the lesson and provide a visual tool for reinforcement and practice of the lesson at home.
Included with the curriculum is an audio recording (CD or cassette) for each unit. The recordings include the words, phrases, and sentences for the weekly lessons, spoken in English and in Mandarin Chinese. The Chinese songs for each week’s lesson are also included, sung in Chinese. The audio recordings are extremely valuable for learning to hear the correct pronunciation of Chinese, as well as learning to hear and duplicate the four Mandarin tones. Listening to the recordings is a great way for children to practice their Chinese lessons and to involve the rest of the family!
Primary Levels

6-7-year-olds |
The Primary Level classes build upon the vocabulary and concepts learned in the Beginning Levels. The units are also built around a theme, such as “My School,” “My Birthday,” etc. Classes are 90 minutes in length, and lessons include a more advanced study of spoken and written Chinese. Students also have the chance to participate in Chinese dance lessons.
Intermediate Levels
11-year-olds and above
Students in the Intermediate Level classes continue their progress in the study of Mandarin Chinese. Use of English is minimized as their ability to speak and write in Chinese continues to grow. Great progress can be seen in these students as their confidence in their language skills increases dramatically. Chinese dance classes are offered for students in these levels as well.
